Dermaplaning is actually a method to remove villi and facial hair, which in addition has a great effect on skin exfoliation. This is done using a fine razor and helps the skin shine and clear. Dermaplaning has been a popular method for both men and women in Japan since the past and it was called kaosuri. In this method, the dead cells on the skin are removed along with the hairs and villi, which rejuvenates the skin.

How is dermaplaning done?

In the dermaplaning method, a blade called exfoliating dermatome moves back and forth across your skin at an angle of 45 degrees and removes dead skin cells and facial hair. This blade does not cut your skin. In some clinics, you will be given a face mask or moisturizer before or after this procedure.

Afterward, a soothing gel or ointment may be applied to your skin to reduce redness, swelling, or irritation. This treatment can last from a few minutes to an hour. The length of the procedure depends on the size of the area that needs treatment. Because many people use this service for other areas of the body in addition to facial skin.

Your skin may be red, swollen and a little sensitive after work. This swelling goes away quickly, but if it lasts more than a week, be sure to consult your beautician.

But infection and scarring of the skin after treatment is a very rare case, but not impossible. Another side effect for very sensitive skin is that skin pigments may appear in patches in some parts of the skin. Fortunately, none of these side effects are permanent and are not problematic.

What is the difference between dermaplaning and regular shaving?

Skin dermaplaning is not just a regular hair shave. This method does exfoliation at the same time as removing hair on the face. In addition, the biotherapist can also determine the depth of this exfoliation and perform this service as needed. On the other hand, it is not recommended to use regular razors and razors for facial skin, and in this case, special blades for this work will not cause problems for the skin and will not cause thickening or diagonal hair growth.

What can I expect after dermaplaning?

Recovery from dermaplaning varies from person to person, but you can usually expect:

After 1 week: redness and swelling should decrease. You may notice enlarged pores or small whiteheads on your skin, which usually go away with swelling.

After 2 weeks: crusts may form on the treated area. These shells will disappear. The underlying skin looks firm and pink and may itch.

After 4-6 weeks: You can return to sports or other activities, but you should still avoid the sun.

After 6 to 12 weeks: Continue to stay out of the sun until the treated area returns to your natural skin color.

Care before and after the service

  • If you have a pimple or a new pimple during dermaplaning, postpone the appointment to another day.
  • Do not expose to direct sunlight after work.

Consult your biotherapist to answer this question. But the suggestion we give to our dermaplaning clients at Dr. Mina Rezaei’s clinic is usually once a week.

A better suggestion is to combine this method with other methods such as facial to see a result that is twice as good.
